runes01 asked: Wait, so what exactly is going on with Dick in Forever Evil?
Well, if I knew that…. I don’t know what the writers intend for him, but it doesn’t look good. Rumors are that the Nightwing character won’t survive this but that Dick Grayson will live… to beocme what? That is uncertain. Evil? A shadow of his former self not fighting crime? If I understand the rumours (which I don’t really pay all that great attention to), Nightwing the hero will die, Dick Grayson’s life will not be ended. I’d rather they ended his life doing a gigantic heroic act (as in actually die saving our Earth in FE) than to remain as some kind of shadow of himself in a side-plot to some other Batman Universe story. Or become a criminal.
Of course, I’d rather they just give him a rough time and then let him go back to being Nightwing (and improve the writng of him in that role). But I do see the interest in exploiting the idea of turning a crime-fighter and do-gooder as Dick into a criminal and play with his mind and the mind of the Batfamily. I see the story potential there. If they go that way, Nightwing the superhero can’t contnue - for a while. It’d be like doing the Renegade story over again. Except then Dick only ‘played’ at being criminal.
My hopes are that they are ‘only’ creating a new superhero name for him. He became even popular as Nightwing after Jason took his place as Robin, but then there was a replacement. Dick can’t go back and become Robin (which there now is an opening for). Of course, he could become Batman’s adult crime-fighting partner, but nah… Dick’s not IMHO that guy. He could to some extent havve been that guy preboot, since he’d do anything for Bruce then. Now… not so much.
As for the story in Forever Evil itself: Here’s what I remember: The Crime Syndicate came to our Earth, killed off (they say) all the heroes like Superman, Wonder Woman etc and sent the Titans into some time loop and out of harm’s way (poor Tim). I believe that the Batman we’ve seen in some issues, is Bruce and not some AU version or imposter. He is not dead. He can’t die if the entire storyline is about families as Owlman now let us know since he told the story of the AU Flying Graysons. Then they need Bruce. And Alfred. And Tim. Jason. Babs.
Anyway, Dick was kidnapped and brought to the Crime Syndicate. His civilian identity revealed to the entire world before the eyes of all of Gothamand’s villians. Now Owlman (Thomas Wayne Jr) and Evil Alfred wants him to play a part in their crime scheme. It will probably save the Earth we know but it won’t save Nightwing. Dick will not be the same man we know him as (ias if h’s ever been that since the New 52 anyway).
TBC, obviously. Everyone with more or better knowledge than me about this, please feel free to correct me.
I hope that answered your question. Sorry for the rant but I’ve been out of the loop for a while and it felt good talking comics again.
